Choosing The Right Nursery Furniture
Before welcoming a little one into the world, it’s important that you have their nursery set up for them for when they arrive. Designing your nursery is an exciting part of prepping for your newborn's arrival, but it can also be a stressful process. Style, safety, comfort, convenience, and functionality are all deciding factors you must consider before buying any furniture. So, before you start purchasing, ask yourself the following questions.
How much space do I have?
Figuring out how much space you have to work with is one of the most difficult parts of your nursery design plan. The size of your space will determine what size crib you can fit, how much storage space you’ll have, if you can fit a changing table, and which items are a necessity for your room. The most important thing to remember is that you want your furniture to fit comfortably in the room. For safety reasons, it’s important to avoid overcrowding the room with too much furniture. Another thing to consider for safety reasons is avoiding placing your furniture too close to doors, windows, electric outlets, power cords, and vents.
How much storage space do I need?
Something to keep in mind when thinking about nursery furniture is how much storage you’ll need for clothes, toys, essentials, etc. If you don’t have a walk-in or large closet for your nursery, it might be an idea to invest in furniture that has extra storage space.
How important is quality?
Buying furniture can be pricey and especially when you have to change them out every couple of months. This is why investing in a quality piece of furniture is essential for saving money in the long run. Without realizing it, nursery furniture gets damaged very easily when your children enter their toddler phase. Buying quality pieces with good structural engineering will keep your furniture lasting much longer and are great for repeated use if more kids come in the future. Wardrobes/armoires are also a great investment that you can hold onto for a long time and can last your child well into their teen years.
What is my design aesthetic?
This is the fun part of setting up your nursery, the design! You and your little one will be spending a lot of time in this space, so it's important to choose a design that’s calming for them and enjoyable for you. Neutral, relaxing colours are always a great option for your specific colour scheme. A clean, neutral bedroom is calming—and when you’re putting your baby to bed, calm is what you’ll need. Adding a pop of colour, or unique patterns in your accessories can add a splash of excitement to your nursery.
Remember, before starting your nursery design journey it’s important to take time to plan and research what you need and then base your purchases around that.
